Youtube Outage, Panic Ensues

Youtube Outage - Youtube went down today and it seems that this affected millions of people across the Globe. In one hand you have the thousand of folks who publish content in their channels who well… actually make a living out of it. On the other, the millions of people who watch the videos on a daily basis.

Many bloggers hurried to report the news. Me? Well I was sleeping over here but the news surprised me as this is one of the biggest sites on the Web now owned by Google. The cause of why Youtube went down is still unclear and no statements have been issued by the site.

There were even talks about Google being hacked. We’ll have to wait for what Google has to say. This just show us the power this site has not only because of the videos you find there. These videos are actually part of website contents.

I’ll be updating this section as we find out more about the Youtube outage.

The Homicide Report

the-homicide-report.jpg

The Homicide Report (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/homicidereport/) is a blog that is sparking quite some talk on the Web. Why? Because it tells the accounts of every single murder in LA!

The blog is written by Jill Levoy of the LA Times and it is a new ambitious project that let us be witness of the power of the Web 2.0 and the real-time updates the Internet can bring us. I think it is also a great way to bring conscience about the murders and see how they affect people’s lives.

I’ve read some of the posts and they revel a human side to stories, even in what we perceive as “common murders”. It brings us name, faces, facts and let us see that life is not a game.

“The Web offered what the paper did not: unlimited space,” Leovy wrote in a front-page story summarizing her year as creator and the first blogger for The Homicide Report.

Zivity.com, The New Adult Social Site

zivity-com.jpg

Zivity.com is a new social network that has been generating a lot of buzz over the last few days. It is different from the common “social network” sites like Facebook or Myspace because to start they charge you a subscription fee and, it also features lots of nude photos.

Some of you might compare it to other adult sites like AdultFriendFinder or Xtube, but this new site is backed by big venture capital. This new site will be a challenge for Scott Banister co-founder of the site. As you know, it is very, very, very easy to find porn online, not only just nudes but more explicit pictures.

zivity.jpg

“We are believers, and so are our new investors, in this big shift that’s going on in entertainment. … [MySpace] is actually the largest photography site in the world. What they have, uniquely, is all of this photographic content in the context of a social environment,” Banister told ABCNews.com.

“It’s a social network built around who took the photographs. We look at that and we see a huge opportunity to enter that same market, but with a subscription-only model.”

In order to be a part of Zivity.com you must register and pay a monthly fee of $10. You then can see and rate various nude women pictures. The rest is quite simple – if you are accustomed to social networks – you can connect with people, make friends. The idea is that this is a win-win situation for people to watch pictures of women and for photographers and models to earn money. The photographers and models get paid according to the number of votes.

“If you look at traditional media, obviously nudity clearly has its place,” he said. “Certainly it works on the ‘L Word’ and ‘Weeds’ and ‘Sex and the City.’ New York Magazine can have Lindsay Lohan.”

Zivity.com this way is also ad-free “When you’re 100 percent supported by advertisers you’re kind of in a strait jacket. We’re trying to create a social network environment that doesn’t have to play into that strait jacket. … We’ve sent the advertisers packing.”

Right now the waiting list is of 30,000 people. You can also be on the waiting list of beta testers at Zivity.com
