What is Necklacing?

It is a brutal lynching tactic that involves putting a tire around the victim’s neck (the necklace) and then setting it on fire. Back in the 80’s this was commonly seen as a sentence put by “people’s courts”.

Now necklacing is not used with collaborators of Apartheid and criminals, but on Zimbabweans and Mozambicans who left their countries due to extreme poverty.

The reason of the attack: the claim that these immigrants are taking other people’s jobs. According to CNN:

“Inadequate housing, a lack of running water and electricity, the rising prices of food, and escalating crime — nearly 20,000 people were slain in South Africa last year — add to the resentment.”

In the end it is just murdering for money.

The police of South Africa is trying to control the riots and already 400 people have been arrested for murder, public disturbance and property damage.
